Age Friendly Communities
A liveable community is one that:
- Is safe and secure
- Provides affordable and appropriate housing and transport options
- Offers supportive community features and services
- Enables independence so people can age in place
- Welcomes people of all ages, backgrounds, and circumstances to belong and participate
COTA Tasmania’s work aligns with the WHO Age Friendly Cities Framework. We advocate at all levels of government for Age Friendly Liveable Communities principles to be embedded in planning, policy, and service design.
Feeling safe, supported, and included goes beyond housing or the built environment–it is about creating communities where everyone can thrive.
The framework to support older Tasmanians is set out in the Tasmanian State Government’s Respectful, Age-Friendly Island: Older Tasmanians Action Plan 2025–2029, launched on 22 January 2025. The plan sets out the Tasmanian Government’s vision:
“A respectful, age-friendly island where older Tasmanians are valued, connected, and supported.”
COTA Tasmania supported the development of this Plan, leading extensive consultation across the state to ensure the voices of older Tasmanians, their families, and communities were central.
As the leading voice for older Tasmanians, we will continue to work closely with the Department of Premier and Cabinet to ensure the Plan is well-resourced, monitored, and delivers meaningful change so all Tasmanians can age well.
