Generations Connect Fun Day Brings Community Together Across the Generations

More than 1,100 Tasmanians came together for COTA Tasmania’s Generations Connect Fun Day, celebrating connection, community and intergenerational friendships. The free event also marked the exciting launch of Seniors Month, expanding Tasmania’s celebration of ageing from one week to a full month this October.

With beautiful weather, fantastic energy and a strong sense of community, COTA Tasmania’s Generations Connect Fun Day was a wonderful celebration of connection, learning and shared experiences. Held at Princes Wharf 1, the free community event welcomed an incredible 1,139 attendees, bringing together children, parents, grandparents, young people and older Tasmanians for a day full of activities, conversations and laughter.

From hands-on activities and demonstrations to spontaneous conversations between generations, the event created a vibrant and welcoming space where connections flourished. COTA Tasmania CEO Brigid Wilkinson said the event was a powerful reminder of what happens when communities intentionally create spaces for people of all ages to come together.

“Generations Connect: Fun Day is about far more than just a fun day out. It’s about building understanding, reducing isolation, creating confidence across generations, and reminding us that meaningful connection can happen in the simplest of moments,” Ms Wilkinson said.

“Seeing young people connecting with older Tasmanians, families enjoying activities together, and community organisations coming together with such enthusiasm was incredibly encouraging. These are the kinds of experiences that help strengthen communities.”

A highlight of the day was the official launch of Seniors Month, marking an exciting new chapter for Tasmania’s celebration of ageing.

Previously known as Seniors Week, the initiative will now expand into a full month of activities and events across October, creating even more opportunities for older Tasmanians to participate, connect and celebrate ageing in their communities.

One attendee shared how much the day meant to their family.

“It was such a wonderful event. I came along with my grandchildren and we all had a fantastic time. There was so much to do, everyone was welcoming, and the fact that everything was free made it even more special. Events like this really bring people together.”

Generations Connect Fun Day is part of COTA Tasmania’s broader commitment to building stronger, more inclusive communities by fostering intergenerational connection and helping older Tasmanians stay active, engaged and connected.

Events like this are only possible through the support of a strong community network. COTA Tasmania extends sincere thanks to all sponsors, stallholders, activity providers, demonstrators, volunteers and community members who helped make the event such a success.

A special thank you to our major supporters Princes Wharf 1, Rotary Club of Hobart, City of Hobart, Triple M Hobart, and Department of Premier and Cabinet for helping bring this important event to life.

As Tasmania’s population continues to age, initiatives like Generations Connect: Fun Day play an important role in creating opportunities for connection, learning and stronger communities for everyone.
