Walk Against Elder Abuse

Walk Against Elder Abuse

In the year of the Aged Care Royal Commission, it’s more important than ever raise our voices against the abuse of older people wherever it occurs.

Please join COTA Tasmania’s annual Walks Against Elder Abuse on 14 June, the eve of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).

WEAAD is the time each June designated by the United Nations for countries around the world to raise awareness of elder abuse.

In 2018, our walks in Hobart and Launceston made a powerful statement  about the terrible toll elder abuse takes on individuals, families and communities. In 2019, we are walking again in both cities, to promote respect for people of all ages and spread the word that information and assistance is available through the Elder Abuse Helpline – 1800 441 169‬.

IN LAUNCESTON: We gather at 9.45am for a 10am march. The starting point is the same as last year – the Tamar Street entrance to City Park opposite Cameron Street. We will walk down Cameron Street, along George Street, through the Brisbane Street Mall, along Charles Street and through Civic Square to the Town Hall. The Launceston walk will be led by the Mayor, Alderman Albert van Zetten. We are hoping for an extra big turnout this year, now that media coverage of the inaugural Launceston walk in 2018 has alerted people in the north of the state to this annual event.

IN HOBART: We gather at 9.45 am for a 10am start at the Collins Street end of the Elizabeth Street Mall. Note that the time and place are different from last year. Our fifth annual Hobart walk will be led by the Minister for Human Services, the Honourable Roger Jaensch MP, and the Lord Mayor of Hobart, Councillor Anna Reynolds. Before we set off, the wonderful Sing For Your Life Choir will raise our spirits and determination with an inspiring song.

At the end of both our walks, we’ll be treated to morning tea by the respective council – a great way to get to know like-minded people in our communities and celebrate the many contributions of older Tasmanians.

If you are able to join us, please RSVP for catering purposes to lynm@cotatas.org.au or 6231 3265.

Each of us has a role to play in preventing elder abuse. If you are not free to walk with us on 14 June, please make a donation or fundraise if you can, to help us organise this important event. Then spread the word to your friends and family.

If you or anyone you know is experiencing elder abuse, please call the Elder Abuse Helpline on ‪1800 441 169‬.

COTA Tasmania supports Tasmania’s Elder Abuse Prevention Strategy.

Our activities associated with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day are supported by the Tasmanian Government, the City of Launceston, the City of Hobart and Mathers House.
